Song: Black and Blue // By: Phillip Larue

"I don't understand ---
I don't understand.
Will you hold my hand?
Help me understand."

Day 61: Echoes.

Song: Freedom Hangs Like Heaven // By: Iron & Wine

"And night birds digging 'til dawn
Freedom hangs like heaven over everyone
Ain't nobody knows what a newborn holds
But his mama says he'll walk on water
and wander back home
Wander back home."

Day 60: The Listening Skill.
Song: Helplessness Blues // By: Fleet Foxes

"And now after some thinking, I'd say I'd rather be
A functioning cog in some great machinery serving something beyond me ---
But I don't, I don't know what that will be.
I'll get back to you someday soon you will see.
What's my name, what's my station, oh just tell me what I should do."

Day 59: At last!
Song: I Go to the Barn // By: Band of Horses

"Well, I like to think I'm the mess you'd wear with pride."

Today .... there were hot dogs in the cafeteria!! Finally. An abundance of them. And corndogs. And french fries. And I no longer need to feel sad in my soul that I am being denied such a long-awaited meal. It has been a week and a half since I started craving such a ridiculous food.

Day 58: Unavoidable.
Song: The Weight // By: The Band

"Crazy Chester followed me, and he caught me in the fog.
He said, 'I will fix your rags, if you'll take Jack, my dog.'
I said, 'Wait a minute, Chester, you know I'm a peaceful man.'
He said, 'That's okay, boy, won't you feed him when you can?'"

Day 57: Shoeboxes.
Song: Everybody's Changing // By: Keane

"You say you wander your own land,
but when I think about it ---
I don't see how you can.
Your eyes say:
Everybody's changing
And I don't know why."

Day 56: Bed Bugs.
Song: Listen to the Music // By: The Doobie Brothers

"And the crowd is growing bigger ---
List'nin' for the happy sounds;
And I got to let 'em fly."

Today was filled with fake pigs-in-blankets (still no hot dogs), Dwight K. Schrute, great music, rice cakes with cheese curds, and Amazing Grace. Josh Warner ... I promise there will be pictures of you put up very soon. If I fail, you have my full permission to make me wear the beanie you made tonight all day long ... with the seam right down the front --- not down the back in the cool way. (PS - your crocheting skills rock. [impressive for realsies!])

Fifty-Five

Day 55: Mango Pudding.
Song: Roadhouse Blues // By: The Doors

"The end is always near."

Today I got to play piano with my sister at Trinity's coffeehouse! It was good times. Also --- as it turns out, she can rap. I kid you not. And she's good at it, too. I am trying to think of a place where this new-found hobby of hers can become useful. But I cannot. But she can rap! So, really, that's all that matters. Maybe there's a place in the cast of LOST for her. They all seem to be talented enough.

Day 54: A Greek Frieze.
Song: Transatlanticism // By: Death Cab for Cutie

"I was standing on the surface of a perforated sphere
When the water filled every hole.
And thousands upon thousands made an ocean,
Making islands where no island should go.

The distance is quite simply much too far for me to row.
It seems farther than ever before.

I need you so much closer."

Madame X. A frog and a monkey. "This is the place where beauty becomes most personal to us." Hoop skirts, boxcar children, and the starfish.

Day 53: Plankton and the Seven Deadly Sins.
Song: Old Habits // By: Hot Bodies in Motion

But it seems I always do."

Today was a day of fortune cookies, ambulances, and the second inauguration of Lincoln.

Day 52: Resume.
Song: Serpentine // By: Chris Bathgate

"Does my name sting your tongue?
One brash phrase cut crush these fragile days ---
My thoughts swirl in some shrill sad cannonade."

Day 50: The Windows.
Song: Silver Trees // By: Rocky Votolato

"You'll always remember what grew out of decisions that death can't steal."

Today I met Daniel and his dad. They were burying "Dog," the squirrel. Daniel doesn't have any pets, but he likes animals, and wants to come back and check on Dog sometime.

Day 49: Still No Hot Dogs.
Song: Foot Shooter // By: Frightened Rabbit

"And when the dam bursts open
And you're drowned out, boy ---
Better go outside;
Sit in your boat and wait
Till you get washed away."

Day 48: And No Hot Dogs.
Song: Fireworks // By: yOya

"From here the days get shorter,
Tireless, but older.
Come on, let's get older ---
And keep our hands held down."

Today all I ate were m&ms. And a cheeto. And all I really wanted was a hot dog.

Day 44: Artichoke Hearts: A Valentine's Food.
Song: Falling // By: The Civil Wars

"Haven't you seen me sleepwalking? ...
Why am I holding my breath?"

Today I participated in a Harry Potter book club. It would have helped if I had ever read the books. I felt special, though, when I received a valentine that said: "I love you, Siriusly." My daily banter consisted of rabbit stories, nerdy obsessions, and Dmitri Martin ("the punch line is unexpected, and anticlimactic"). Happy accidents, some good doses of Toto, gloriously sweet music, and kiwifruit.

Day 41: Calzone.
Song: My Body // By: Young the Giant

"Hey, the rails are caught now ...
Round this town of steam."

This is Tom! The owl. We confused a kind man who tried to alert us that we had an owl on the car roof. We knew the owl was there. The owl was Tom.

Day 39: Wound.
Song: Tip of the Tongue // By: The Donnis Trio

"But ever since that night and after ---
The dreams I had I can't recapture.
And it brings me down so low;
The more I search the less I find,
The more I look the more I'm blind."

This is Ian. He used to borrow parking blockades when he was bored, and "rearrange" them ...

On to the interstate. Under the cover of darkness.

Day 38: Defeated.
Song: Killing for Love // By: Jose Gonzalez

"You've got a heart filled with passion ---
Will you let it burn for hate or compassion?"

Laundry day! My roommate and I decided that folding damp clothes at 2am is not our favorite activity. Fact.

"And I've been quickly ushered in
To a world that I confess I do not know."

There was only about five-minutes-worth of pizza in these boxes.

Hooray Superbowl!

Day 34: Dinner.
Song: The Tornado // By: Cloud Cult

"You fake it 'til you make it,
That's the story of your life."

Don't bring a print piece from 1963 to the Production Methods spec-ing circle. Don't order potato skins. Don't move the vinyl letters. Don't take a nap instead of working on your senior project.

Do eat a slice of carrot cake the size of your face.

Day 33: Venus Fly Trap.
Song: Summer Teeth // By: Wilco

"His black shirt cries before his shoes get cold ...
He hits snooze twice before he dies."

This poster has become the new favorite in the spattering of imagery across our studio. I like to picture Willy saying this in a Minnesotan accent.
